My name is Rachel Wise. In August of 2016, I set out from Calgary, Alberta, Canada in hopes of cycling to South America and blogging about it as I went. I had never been on a bike trip before, and did not have a lot of travel experience. It turns out, cycling across a country is hard, and blogging became a low priority. It took working through some personal struggles before I found my travel legs (literally, it was months before my legs stopped hurting). A big part of that was crossing the border into Mexico, and another big part was re-discovering martial arts and realising what an amazing addition training was to my travel experience. And thus Luchadora The Explorer was born.
Although I have started this blog well into my journey, I feel like a new person and want to share all the joys, and the struggles, of living a life of constant personal growth and challenge. I started this journey because I wanted to learn, because I believe that putting yourself in uncomfortable situations is an integral part of development. Cycling, martial arts, interacting with different cultures, being alone, all of these things have given me beautiful, difficult, and heart wrenching experiences, and I learn something new from each and every one.
It is easy to make this trip look like it is fun and easy, check out my Instagram for that (@luchadoratheexplorer), but if you want to hear about the flip side as well, then go ahead and explore this website.
If you want to just hear about the BJJ side of things, I have another blog hosted on the wonderful BJJ Globetrotters website. Check it out here.
